What Does an Illinois Driver's License Classification Mean?

Illinois has long since joined Federal requirements when it comes to a driver’s license classifications. The Illinois driver’s license classifications are as follows:

  • Class A: A combination of vehicles with gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds and with a trailer over 10,000 pounds;
  • Class B: A single vehicle with gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds with a trailer up to 10,000 pounds;
  • Class C: A single vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of at least 16,001 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds;
  • Class D: A single vehicle less than 16,001 pounds.
  • Class L or Class M: These Classes are needed to operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle.
